Travel protection

Cover for journeys, longer stays and arrivals in Austria.

The existing AWAG offering addresses Austrian residents travelling abroad and people entering Austria for short or extended stays. The right cover depends on the destination, duration and purpose of travel

Based on AWAG’s existing service information.

01

Start with the journey, not the policy name

Destination, duration, reason for travel, age, health situation and planned activities shape the relevant risks. A weekend in a neighbouring country and a longer stay in Austria do not require the same review.

02

Medical treatment and assistance abroad

The important questions include where treatment is covered, whether direct settlement is possible, how an emergency hotline works and which limits or exclusions apply to transport and repatriation.

03

Cancellation and interruption are separate questions

Cover before departure and cover during the journey may follow different conditions. Booking value, cancellation reasons, deductibles and notification deadlines should be checked against the actual trip.

04

Documents should travel with the traveller

Policy number, assistance contact, confirmation of cover and relevant medical information should be accessible during the journey. For visa or entry purposes, the required wording and coverage period need confirmation.

Coverage is subject to the selected insurer’s policy wording, limits, exclusions and individual acceptance. This page provides general orientation, not a promise of cover.

Protection matched to the actual journey

The useful cover is the one that responds to the traveller, destination and commitments already made.

01

Before departure

Review cancellation exposure, entry evidence, existing cover and any health or activity-related conditions.

02

During the trip

Understand medical, assistance, interruption, baggage and liability provisions, including limits and deductibles.

03

When something happens

Know the emergency contact, notification duties, required evidence and the route for submitting costs.

From itinerary to documented cover

A short review before departure can prevent uncertainty at the moment assistance is needed.

01

Describe the journey

Confirm travellers, destinations, dates, booking values, activities and purpose of stay.

02

Compare the relevant protection

Review benefits, exclusions, limits, deductibles, assistance and any entry requirements.

03

Prepare the documents

Issue confirmation, store contacts and explain what to do and retain if an event occurs.

Good to know

01Does public health insurance cover every trip?

No. Scope and reimbursement can be limited and vary by destination and treatment. Additional private travel protection may be relevant after an individual review.

02Are pre-existing conditions automatically covered?

Not necessarily. Definitions, stability periods and exclusions vary between policies and must be checked before purchase.

03Does travel insurance cover risky sports?

Only where the policy includes the relevant activity and conditions. Winter sports, diving, competitions and professional activities can require special review.

04What should I do in a medical emergency abroad?

Seek urgent help first, then contact the insurer or assistance provider as soon as reasonably possible and retain medical reports, invoices and reference numbers.
